Queens Being is a mentoring program that Lowcountry Youth Services established to teach and build young women, ages 11-14, by providing a positive community of belonging for young women of color. We will provide:
> Exceptional enrichment and leadership development opportunities to young women of color in the greater TriCountry area will allow them to become leaders who positively change their communities.
> Mentorship via small group cohorts allows young women of color to create and mold their own purpose/identity through unique experiences.
> Intentional activities and conversations that allow young women of color to identify risk behaviors that could result in issues involving sexual reproductive health and dating violence In Queens Being, young women will find their voices, gain skills, develop self confidence, expand creative expression, explore educational and career pathways, and construct strong bonds within a multigenerational and intercultural community.
Three core focus:
> College and Career Readiness
> Positive Identity Development
> Healthy Living
There are several incentives and rewards in place for each member that follows the expectations set by the program. The members enjoy gatherings at the bowling alley, skating rink, movie theatres, etc. as a result of good behavior and good character. All of these, of course, is predicated on the progress and growth of the club members. Queens’ Being also has several events that are planned each year for the girls:
A jump start to the year where our members and families come together to celebrate a new year of service and mentorship.
LYS Awards and Induction Ceremony
This is a recognition ceremony for the mentees who committed to the success of the program throughout the year with consistent participation at monthly sessions and community service projects and recognizing each child for their academic successes. After the applicants complete the required process, they will be recognized as an official “Queen”.
This is a celebration of a completed year for all the girls who maintain participation throughout the year with monthly sessions & community service while maintaining responsibilities with home and school expectations.
Every second Saturday during the Club Year (September - May) QB has its monthly Club Meetings. These meetings are times when the mentors and mentees come together for the purpose of learning special skills based on the theme and curriculum of the month. There is normally a Parent Advisory Council meeting that happens simultaneously.
Community Service Projects
Community Service is a big part of being a member of the QB. Our members have a yearly service requirement of 18 hours. These hours can be earned during group Community Service Projects or on an individual basis.
We aren't ALWAYS working! Sometimes, we get together for fun outings where our young men get to let loose and have a good time! These can include trips to the movies, parks, cookouts, or even trips.
• New members must be young women of color ages 11-14
• New members must agree to follow all rules and regulations as implemented by QB
